The year 2020 brought many challenges, but we have weathered the storm, I for one am eager to see what the year 2021 has to bring.
Seeing as though my specialty is Job Search Coaching, I would like to focus this blog on the employment challenges many faced in 2020. I hope you will find this blog inspiring and will view 2021 as a chance to embark upon new opportunities and not dwell on the disappointments from 2020. There is light at the end of the tunnel.
Unemployment was amongst the challenges many faced in 2020. Some lost their jobs due to COVID 19, and in the beginning the government was generous by providing an additional $600 per week in unemployment compensation and by providing a stimulus check. Unemployment didn't seem so bad with this supplemental income. However, the extra $600 per week ceased and there seemed to be no agreement in sight for another stimulus check. Some people did not have enough to live off of and others settled for jobs they really didn’t want in order to provide for their families.
I have spoken to many whose small businesses have prospered even in the midst of the pandemic, which is awesome; however, some have not been so fortunate. Some businesses have closed, some have reduced employees, and some were forced into bankruptcy. Like unemployment, the Payroll Protection Program and other grants kept them a float for a time, but there was only so much funding to be obtained by those means, so unfortunately those blessed to still be in business have suffered a loss.
Because the economy was so unpredictable during the pandemic several companies decided to discontinue hiring new employees. There were many job postings which brought false hope to candidates. I can speak from experience, I had a couple of job interviews when I thought I may be laid off from my current employer, and when contacting the Recruiters to find out the status, I was told the company had decided not to fill the position at this time. It was very disheartening. At the time, I didn't realize the severity of the pandemic, so I took it personal, but now I know those companies had no other choice.
Despite all these challenges in 2020, I am optimistic that 2021 will be better. There is now a vaccine being administered for the COVID 19 virus. The economy is picking back up, so small businesses will soon be in a better position. Companies are starting back to hire.
